The Minister of National Education

We have come to realize the urge to strengthen the role of education in nation building. Referring to the fourth amendment to the Constitution of Indonesia (UUD 45), the people has agreed to allocate 20% of Indonesia’s total budget for education. This reflects clearly on how the progress of this nation will be determined by the improvement in the educational system.

The government, in this case the Ministry of National Education who is responsible for this mission, has dispersed the implementation into three main areas:

  1. to provide equal and wider access to education;
  2. to improve quality, relevance and competitiveness; and
  3. to enhance the management, accountability and public image. These three pillars are believed to sustain the quality of national educational system in Indonesia.

Technical and vocational education as the sub-system in the national education system plays a very strategic role in creating skilled human resources. The Ministry of National Education has put continuous effort to increase the number of vocational school students so that the proportion will reach 70% vocational school students and 30% the senior high school students. Vocational schools thus play the role of preparing students with necessary skills and professional attitude towards employment. Considering that globalization has become a reality, we need human resources who are not only skilled but also flexible and have an entrepreneurial flair.
